Internet Area Network on
Panel at Telecommunications Reliability Conference at
Columbia University
On
May 17, 2007, James Martino, Chairman of the Board for
Internet Area Network Inc., spoke on a panel at the
‘Telecommunications Reliability in the Information
Capital of the World’ seminar presented by the
Columbia Institute for
Tele-Information (CITI) and the
New York Telecommunications
Reliability Advisory Council (NYTRAC.)
The seminar’s purpose was to address the stability and
reliability of telecommunications in New York City, to
quantify and qualify the problems, and to address
solutions via the responsibility of carriers and service
providers as well as the government both on a local and
federal level.
Mr. Martino spoke on the panel with other large carriers
and service providers such as att, Verizon, Neutral
Tandem, and FiberNet. Representing the government was
the NYC Dept. of Information Technology and
Telecommunications, NYS Department of Public Service,
and the Public Safety & Homeland Security Bureau of the
Federal Communications Commission.
The majority of the panelists spoke of large network
outages and the effect it would have for the large
carriers. Mr. Martino demonstrated a concern for small
to medium sized businesses and explained how they are
often unprepared for business and service disruptions.
“Internet Area Networks believes that it is imperative
that we offer small and medium businesses disaster
recovery solutions which fit their budgets. The
iareaOffice solution can quickly and affordably enhance
small business preparedness while actually saving them
money and allowing them to focus on their clients,”
explained Martino. The focus of American Express on the
development of their “Open” product was cited as
evidence that much of the growth in the economy was
being driven by small and medium business and that large
companies were shifting tactics to assist these growth
engines.
The constant theme throughout the conference, was the
issue that telecommunications is NOT something to take
for granted. The government, large carriers and service
providers have the ultimate responsibility to protect
against instability, but users must also take
precautions to ensure that they are protected and
trained in preparation for the next disaster.
Emily Guggino, VP Operations at Iareanet, who also
attended the event says, “It was extremely important
that iAreanet was present [at the seminar] to stay
informed and collaborate with other large service
providers. We have an obligation to protect our clients
to the best of our abilities and that means forecasting
and preparing for the next disaster. It’s encouraging
to know that the black out in NYC in 2003 and September
11th are still being evaluated to see how we
can learn from our past oversights in regards to
telecom.”
Internet Area Network Inc. understands the importance of
ensuring network stability and reliability and will
continue to support NYC to ensure against future
pandemic disasters. In order to continue its
involvement, Internet Area Network Inc. has joined
NYTRAC as a council member. |
